There’s something special about visiting The Blue Dolphin beach cottages on Sanibel Island during the summer months.
Summer on Sanibel is like a different world compared to the peak tourism months. There’s no traffic. There’s no wait at the restaurants. There’s no crowds at the shops. But everything is still open for business.
Summer is the time of year when the local residents of southwest Florida spend more time on Sanibel — and take advantage of the laid back vibe and easy parking. At the Blue Dolphin, we frequently welcome guests from towns as close Fort Myers and Cape Coral when they want to unwind with a romantic beachside staycation right down the road from where they live.
It’s fun visiting the restaurants on Sanibel during the summer and hearing the locals swap stories about southwest Florida. It’s a whole different vibe than when the bars and restaurants are completely filled with guests from other states. It’s cozy. Like a movie.
They may call summer the “rainy season” in Florida, but all that means is that we expect to have a few quick passing scattered showers visible somewhere on the horizon every afternoon. Most of the time, you see the small summer showers passing by in the distance off the shore of our beach without ever feeling a drop of rain. If and when the rain ever does get closer, it’s uncommon for it to last more than 15 or 20 minutes; and then the sun immediately comes back out!
One HUGE benefit of these passing rain showers are the uncommonly gorgeous and dramatic skies they contribute to almost each and every evening on Sanibel! Picture-postcard pastel shades that you truly need to see to believe. Summer sunsets on Sanibel are storybook perfect!
If you haven’t ever experienced a summer getaway to Sanibel, then you owe it to yourself to plan a trip and see the other side of our cherished island community!
